Three Tips from Paolo San Juan’s Makeup Workshop

One of the great joys of makeup is sharing the experience with friends. I have many fond memories of getting ready for parties with some good music in the background, gossiping and exchanging tips. My first makeup “teacher” was YouTube (Thank you, Panacea and Michelle Phan!). I’m happy to report that years later, I’ve upgraded in a big way, under the tutelage of Paolo San Juan.

Paolo is one of the most in-demand makeup artists in Baguio, with a wealth of experience in beauty, bridal, and editorial makeup, as well as the Japanese drama Crossroads and the short film Kintoman. I’ve also had the pleasure of being in his makeup chair on several occasions, some big milestones and some just for fun.

Here are a few takeaways from his recently concluded makeup workshop with Ashtanga Yoga Baguio.

Skincare first

Before any kind of product touches your face, make sure you’ve done your due diligence on skincare. Makeup itself isn’t bad for your skin, but it can cause some damage if you don’t prep your skin before doing your face, or if you leave it on for too long. Neglecting skin care before and after wearing makeup can lead to clogged pores, acne, dryness, and irritation. Think of skincare not as an afterthought, but as a crucial part of your routine.

I moisturize every morning and night, and before applying makeup, with Hada Labo lotion and a few spritzes of water. Find a product that works for you and your skin type and stick with it religiously. Your skin will thank you!

Burgundy is a safe color for everyone

Have you seen those videos of consultants doing color analysis on their clients? They sit in front of a mirror together and flip through a pile of colored cloth squares to figure out the tones that best suit the client, for apparel, jewelry, and makeup. That’s just one way that you can learn what colors will be the most flattering on you.

But if you’re at a loss and don’t have the time or budget for a full color analysis, it’s always a safe bet to start with a burgundy pigment. Burgundy works for most skin tones, and while it might seem dark, there’s an easy workaround. Start with a very light layer. See how you feel about it. If you want a bit more intensity, put on another layer. Keep going until you’re happy. It’s much easier to add than to take away, so don’t pile it on right off the bat.

Invest in multi-use products

It’s no secret that makeup – especially high-end, big-brand makeup – can get expensive. I like to stay on budget by scouring places like the AsianBeauty subreddit for recommendations. You’d be surprised at the quality of some unassuming drugstore makeup that won’t cost you and arm and a leg.

Next time you’re adding to your kit, be on the lookout for creams, pencils, tints, and other products that serve more than one purpose. Lip-and-cheek tints are an easy one. With some practice and patience, you can also use an eyeliner pencil to line your eyes and do your “eye shadow” without using eye shadow. An important side note: It’s okay to experiment – but always do a quick skin test with any products you’re using for the first time.

Bonus tip: Show yourself some love

Some makeup is made for total transformation. When it comes to your personal, everyday makeup, it’s much simpler: highlight the beauty that’s already there. Your makeup should boost your confidence! Go to the workshops, watch the tutorials, and take what you need from them. But ultimately, do what makes you love how you look.
